Phase transitions in a colloidal dispersion flowing through a cylindrical capillary

The flow of a charged-stabilized colloidal dispersion of crystalline equilibrium structure through a cylindrical capillary is investigated. The simultaneous existence of up to three differently ordered states is observed under conditions of stationary flow. The evolution of their concentric arrangement along the capillary is determined by Bragg microscopy. For sufficient low fluxes, stationary phase distributions are obtained. While the apparent viscosity is non-monotonous and non-Newtonian, the corresponding velocity profiles are found to be piecewise parabolic and are compatible to numerical calculations. Effect of biomass features on oxygen transfer in conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor systems

Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare the oxygen transfer efficiency in a conventional activated sludge and a membrane bioreactor system. The oxygen transfer was evaluated by means of the oxygen transfer coefficient and α-factor calculation, under different total suspended solids concentration, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge apparent viscosity and size of the flocs. Composite soy lecithin–decylpolyglucoside vesicles: A theoretical and experimental study

In the present work, vesicles made with soy lecithin and a commercial mixture of alkyl polyglucosides were prepared and characterized. Vesicles with a constant amount of soy lecithin and an increasing amount of a decylpolyglucoside surfactant, (OrNS10), were formulated and their physicochemical properties were studied with the aim to design a drug delivery system suitable for different applications. Impact of oxidoreduction potential and of gas bubbling on rheological properties of non-fat yoghurt

International audience; The aim of this work was to study the effect of different gaseous conditions on the physico-chemical properties of yoghurt. Four conditions of oxidoreduction potential (Eh7), +433 mV (milk gassed with air), +405 mV (ungassed milk), +283 mV (milk gassed with N2) and −349 mV (milk gassed with N2–H2) were applied to milk. Influence of temperature on mass transfer in an incomplete trapping single hollow fibre supported liquid membrane extraction of triazole fungicides.

The influence of temperature in a single hollow fibre supported liquid membrane extraction of triazole fungicides with a stagnant acceptor phase was investigated. The mass transfer parameters such as diffusion coefficient, flux and apparent viscosity were determined at temperature ranging from 278 K to 313 K. Increase in temperature led to an increase in diffusion coefficient and flux. The apparent viscosity also decreased with an increase in temperature. The degree of trapping in the acceptor phase influenced the mass transfer at higher temperature. Low-cost viscometer based on energy dissipation in viscous liquids

We describe a new type of low-cost easy-to-use viscometer based on the temperature elevation in a liquid under shear flow. After calibration, this instrument can be used to measure the apparent steady state viscosity for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids with no yield stress. We compute the rise in temperature due to viscous dissipation in a Couette cell and compare it to experimental results for different fluids. We show that the variation of the temperature with shear rate can be used to characterize the rheological behaviour of viscous fluids and to evaluate their viscosity in a large domain, from typically a few cP up to more than 10 P, with an accuracy of about ±5%. Influence of the electrical interface properties on the rheological behavior of sonicated soy lecithin dispersions

A significant effect, on the rheological behavior, due to the electrical properties of vesicles formed from concentrated soy lecithin dispersions have been studied in this work. The rheopectic behavior of concentrated soy lecithin dispersions (120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 g L−1) prepared by swelling–light sonication–freezing–unfreezing procedure is studied and it is specially emphasized on the transition under steady shear from lamellar phase of planar sheets to closed structures as multilamellar vesicles.
